Graphic design is a vast and broad artistic tool used for the communication of ideas and concepts. It is an applied and practical art, where everything on the page or piece has a purpose; to communicate the concept. Graphic design takes the ideas and theories of others and develops them into visuals across different medias for an intended audience. Graphic designers use typography, images, space and form to convey abstract and concrete concepts. Color theory and semiotics also play a large role in graphic design. Knowing what colors, and color combinations and how they illicit different emotions and responses are imperative to a successful design. Semiotics, the study of signs, symbols and their underlying meaning is imperative to successful design.

A graphic designer completes an extensive amount of research on the subject before creating a visual solution. Research can include what the company does, what is their mission and company culture, who are their competitors, and the demographics of their target audience. By doing this, the designer will know what is appropriate for maximum comprehension by the reader.

Graphic design is everywhere and often overlooked to the uneducated audience. Graphic design is primarily thought to be seen in print advertisements, magazines, logos, brand identity, and web design. The audience of successful graphic piece must be able to clearly understand the concepts and message of the piece. Unlike studio artists, where the viewer is left to interpret the meaning behind the piece, the message of a graphic design piece must be clear and consistent.
